Pre-operative orthodontistry Pre-operative The orthodontist will strive to create two symmetrical tooth arcs. During this part of the treatment this will mean the teeth and molars generally become a worse fit, and the ?defect? will exacerbate. The operation that follows, however, will locate the jaws in a normal relationship to one another, creating a more harmonious profile. At the same time, the teeth and molars will fit onto each other better. This preparatory period usually lasts 1 year, plus or minus 6 months. Post-operative Six weeks after surgery, the orthodontist continues his work. The tooth arcs were already symmetrical, but now the relationship between them has been normalized by the surgeon. The orthodontist will now work to make the upper and lower jaws communicate with each other; he will make sure that the lower teeth make contact with their antagonists at the same time when biting down, and that the chewing function is optimal. This ?finishing? period generally takes 6 months, plus or minus 3 months.
